The Community of St. Mary of Nazareth and Calvary - that is the English name of Chama Cha Mariamu Mkatatifu (CMM), is a community of nuns in the Anglican Church of Tanzania.
The community was founded in 1946 when the first three Tanzanian Sisters took their life vows. Originally they were under the wing of the Community of the Sacred Passion and they became an independent religious community before the CSP Sisters returned to England in 1991.
CMM Sisters have their Motherhouse in Kilimani (Masasi) and another ten houses in Tanzania, three of which are in the Diocese of Masasi. One of the eleven houses is in Zambia.
Being based in Masasi, just six miles from the town, they are an integral part of the Diocese and contribute much to the life of the Church and especially to the Diocese in many different ways.
Most young women come from Anglican subsistence farming families and have only primary school education. Consequently a great deal of time and money is spent on extending their education, enabling them to serve their aims better in assisting women and children.
The main income of CMM comes from farming. Adverse weather (too little or too much rain) and poverty makes it difficult to pay for schooling. Some of the Sisters are supported by the Friends of Masasi with scholarships as well as fees and other assistance with further education, thus equipping them to better assist both their Order and the wider Church in the future.
A new charity has recently been established in the UK - African Sisters of St Mary (CMM) Support Group. Their aim is to encourage self help, by providing material and financial assistance, as well as prayer support for their work with disadvantaged women and children. Further details are obtainable from the Treasurer of the Support Group, Jeremy Littleton, 21 Eastley Crescent, Warwick CV34 5RX
