The Bishop Trevor Scholarship Scheme was created as a result of the magnificent boost to our funds that we received from the collection at the Dedication Service of the Bishop Trevor Huddleston window, in Lancing College Chapel in May 2007. There is no doubt in our minds that the size of the collection (the largest ever taken in the Chapel) reflected the esteem and affection with which people remembered Bishop Trevor.

After the Service the Trustees of the Friends of Masasi, together with Richard Price (himself an “old boy” of Lancing College) discussed at length how the funds should be used. We had decided from the beginning that we should try and establish some sort of a scholarship/bursary scheme for young people in the Diocese of Masasi and initially planned to work with CAMFED – an international organization (the British branch of which is based in Cambridge) dedicated to eradicating poverty in Africa through the education of girls and empowerment of young women. CAMFED opened a branch in Dar es Salaam in 2007, and although they have achieved amazing success in the north of the country, they are not yet operating in the Masasi area.

The Trustees felt it important to “get the scheme off the ground” as soon as possible, and consequently, after lengthy deliberation decided to offer the first scholarships to two young men and two Sisters from the Community of St Mary, to start at the Rondo in January 2008.

The Sisters are chosen by Mother Superior and the other Sisters of the Community at Kilimani, and the two young men are selected by a Panel comprising the District Education Officer, the Diocesan Education Officer and the Rector of St Cyprian’s. The money from the Bishop Trevor Scholarship Scheme will cover school fees, school uniform (or in the case of the Sisters, a clothing allowance), some stationery and some books and it is, of course, a condition of selection that the students’ families would not be able to pay their fees at the Rondo.

The money that was donated at Lancing is invested at the best possible rate, which will give us an ongoing income (albeit it a very small one with present interest rates!), but we also hope that some of our supporters may wish to contribute to the fund, which would enable us not only to continue to offer the scholarships for many years to come, but also possibly to extend the scheme.

The Scholarship Scheme is now in its second year and the young people who have benefited to date are:

2008 - Sister Edna, Sister Thecla, Kepha Bashidi and Alban Noel

2009 - Sister Anna Mariamu, Sister Violet, Baraka Mowola and Octavian Steven

Dear Mother,
I hope you are fine and your family. I and all the Sisters are fine.

The intention of my letter is to greet you and to thank you and tell you about the programs I am studying. I am continuing well. Now I am in Form One and we are reading the following subjects: Mathematics, Science, English, Geography, History, Kiswahili and Civics. My result was that I passed all the subjects – average pass 71, my place in class 9 out of 38.

Thank you mother for helping us all in need of school.
Thank you and God bless you.

Thekla CMM
Dear Mother,
I am very happy to greet you in the Lord Jesus Christ. I hope you are fine with your family. I hope you are continuing well in all your activities.
And I, mother, I am continuing well in my life. I am progressing well with the lessons. I thank God for helping me every day. My aim is that I say thank you for your agreement to help me. I don’t know what to do to show my gratitude. God bless you with your family. I will not forget you mother in my life.

I am continuing to pray for you and all your family. I wish you good work and best wishes in your life.
